Today's guest post and giveaway are from Lorilee Lippincott of the blog Loving Simple Living and the ebook, '321 Stop - stop running and and start living'.
About a year and a half ago I hit the point in my life where I felt so frustrated and overwhelmed with everything I had to do and keep up with that I had to make a change. I was upset so much of my time and limited energy was spent trying to keep up and so little was spent hanging out with my kids and working on things I enjoyed. About this time my kids and I got to go along with my husband on a traveling work project. We spent a good part of 3 months away from home living in a motel about 5 hours away. It gave us time away from our life to think and talk. We wanted to make sure we centered our life around living, family, and doing what we enjoyed. During that time we made some big decisions.
We decided:
- to get rid of most of our stuff
- to rent our 2000 sqare foot house and move to an apartment that didn't require maintenance
- to make time to travel as a family
- to find time to learn and grow in areas we were personally interested in
We did it! It took several months to get out of our house and several more months to keep cutting back our belongings to where we felt we had what we wanted and could stay on top of everything. We took a 5 week road trip vacation. My husband has been learning photography and I have had time to work on writing.
Now, the house is not always clean but it only takes about an hour to clean it. The kids still fight over toys (just less of them). The kitchen still gets dirty, but the counter space and the amount of kitchen tools limits the disaster. We spend our evenings and weekends working on our dreams instead of mowing, raking, cleaning, and other house projects. Not perfect, but a huge improvement.
I have been learning more and more about this concept that I now know is called minimalism. Minimalism is about living with what you need and love and nothing else. It isn't about cutting back as much as it is respecting and cherishing what we truly value. It works to apply these concepts to our material belongings, our schedules, our finances, our eating, and even our emotions.
Somewhere in culture, probably originating in retail, we have come to believe that bigger and more is always better without really thinking about why we make this decision. Most of the time it is wrong and robs us of the time, money, and energy we want to spend on what truly matters.
The whole process we have gone through has taught me so much I wanted to share it with others. I have written up a complete manual that includes our story as well as all the tricks and tips we learned along the way. '321 Stop - stop running and start living'; includes everything you need to know to simplify your house, your life, and your head. I haven't figured everything out yet, but I have gotten my life back and love it.

I need help with organizing my finances!!! I feel the urge to always give something away, and find myself buying things that we don't need. I hardly buy new, we buy from garage sales, and consignment stores. My house at times feels like a storage shed...I'm ready to clean and give...to simplify!!
ReplyDeleteTHANK you for the encouragement....when I was reading this...I was thinking that sounds just like me. ;)
We live in a small apartment and have now become debt free, but we need to simplify and improve our health. Doing everything with intention.

We need to simplify our possessions. It's amazing how quickly they accumulate and how little we really use.
ReplyDeleteI need to dispose of a lot of my stuff! We downsized a few years ago, but didn't downsize our stuff!
ReplyDeleteWe need to purge in every area of our house so it's not so cluttered & overwhelming. I've been on a journey the last few months to do this & have just started blogging about it but I could really use some tips on this subject to make sure I'm simplifying everything I can!
ReplyDeleteFor me, it's clipped/printed recipes. I have a LOT and need to pare down.
ReplyDeleteI need to simplify everything! I've started selling things that I don't need but I think I have a long ways to go. I think this book would help keep me motivated to do more!
ReplyDeleteWe definitely need to purge "stuff." I've been trying to organize what we actually use and can't because the other stuff is in the way.
ReplyDeleteOrganization! From closets to dinner!!
ReplyDeleteOh where do I start?! I'm not completely out of control but I know that I need to get everything organized (time, budgets, shopping, cleaning, crafts, clothing...) before it is!
ReplyDeleteWe need less toys and "house stuff" I feel like all I ever do is put things away/clean and not enough time with my 3 kids. We lived in an apt for 6 months with not much stuff and it was great. Now we are in a huge house!!
ReplyDeleteYour story sounds exactly where I am now. I am sick of the mess the clutter the unorganized house. It's made me completely unorganized. I used to be streamlined and then somewhere some how things just began piling up. I have a hard time saying "No" so I always end up doing for others before myself and family. This as well as the every day chores and finances are making life incredibly stressful. I am beginning to hate the constant motion my family is in. Quite frankly I am not sure it's healthy for my kids either. I need to be able to teach them how to simplify their life and enjoy the little things. We are blessed with the ability to have what we want when we want however sometimes working for things is wonderful...and really if you have everything where are the dreams?
ReplyDeleteI need to start weeding out the storage closet that's full of unopened boxes since our move 4 years ago!
ReplyDeleteMy craft area is the one that needs the most help. I like many things and I want to take on more, but in reality I need to simplify and stick to the ones that really bring me joy!
ReplyDeleteWe have decided to not have any more babies. So I need to downsize all the baby stuff I have kept. And make a better system for when the two we do have out grow their stuff.
ReplyDeleteI need to simplify by decluttering our closets, attic...everything. I see a big garage sale in our future!
ReplyDeleteWe need to simplify our "stuff". We definitely have too many clothes that don't fit, too many toys, too much of everything. I love the idea of valuing everything that you own!
ReplyDeleteMy husband and I separated for a few years after our daughter grew up and moved away. I moved into a tiny, one room apartment and went to college during that time. I loved it! Cleaning was a breeze and there was time to LIVE! Since getting back together a couple of years ago, I have grown to despise the time, energy, and money it takes to maintain a big home and multiple acres. Worse yet is how grumpy it makes my husband--but he defines success by 'quantity of possessions.' I would love for him to learn how to pare down!
ReplyDeleteOh, and my previous comment is why I love your blog-- you give me great ideas for keeping it all in order!
ReplyDeleteI definitely need to organize my house! I've recently been trying to get my family on board with having less "stuff" so we can enjoy doing more instead of just being surrounded by stuff.
ReplyDeleteI think I need to simplify my Christmas stuff. I noticed yesterday that have of our storage room is Christmas decor. All that space for basically 1 month of decorating. Ridiculous! But, I LOVE Christmas and decorating so what is the balance?
ReplyDeleteI really need to get my house under control...feel like i'm buried most of the time!! :(

There really isn't a place that doesn't need simplifying. But really, menu planning, and getting my kitchen organized to provide my family with good meals is definitely a priority.

ReplyDeleteI need to declutter every room of the house and get my kitchen functional again.
ReplyDeleteI need to simplify laundry. It should be simple. But it is the area that gets out of control .

My house is a wreck! I need to simplify every area. I am overwhelmed most of the time trying to juggle work, kids, and the house.
ReplyDeleteI need help with my finances and my house. I just can't keep the darn thing clean and organized.
ReplyDeleteI definitely need to simplify my life. Sometimes I feel that it is all so overwhelming. With working and traveling for work, my life sometimes feels upside down.
ReplyDeleteI need to clear out the clutter around the house so that I spend less time looking for stuff that has been misplaced.
ReplyDeleteThe "catch all" on the kitchen table needs to be rectified for sure.
ReplyDeleteOh, I need to simplify kid things (toys, clothes, bedding) and craft/sewing supplies. I'm working on it, but it is always a very s-l-o-w work in progress.
ReplyDeleteI need to simplify all the toys and sort out all the junk that accumilates every day!
ReplyDeleteI need to simplify ways to handle emails, mail and all the other papers that sneak into our home!
ReplyDeleteI need to simplify my WHOLE LIFE!! :-) But mostly my home.
ReplyDeleteWould love some organization tips and tricks.
