Wayfair DIY Challenge - My Laundry Room

Have you heard of Wayfair?  Their tagline is 'a zillion things home' and that pretty much sums it up, because if it's for your home, they've got it.  I was invited to participate in the Wayfair DIY Challenge and was given a product and that I used it to inspire a mini transformation in my home.   Giftcards.com provided a gift card to use towards the transformation.

I chose this simple white pendant light

I knew it would be perfect in my laundry room.  Our laundry room is used multiple times during the day, but it's a room that I haven't decorated.  Painted in builder's white, it had a small wire shelf, the washer and dryer.  This simple pendant light was just the springboard I needed to jump into the project.

Here's the before:
very basic, small laundry room with a very dim, builder-grade light.

As soon I got the white pendant light I started thinking of ways to transform the space, making it prettier and more functional.

I sketched out a simple plan:

And started on my lamp transformation...I knew I wanted to paint the light and use either fabric or paper and do a little decoupage.

I found this new product at JoAnn's - it's adhesive fabric paper:
 Neat, right?

I taped off the cord and placed the light in a box to spray paint it.

I chose this Krylon Gloss spray paint in 'blue ocean breeze'.

Once the paint was set and dry, I got my supplies together - fabric paper, scissors, ric-rac ribbon, and Martha Stewart's Satin Finish.

I trimmed the fabric paper and pieced it together around the bottom of the light, creating a wide border.

Then I added two coats of this satin finish to protect the fabric.

Then I attached the ric-rac ribbon on the top and bottom of the border with my glue gun.

Once the light was complete, I was ready to complete the room.

I painted the laundry room in Benjamin Moore's Revere Pewter - I have this paint in the majority of my house - it's the perfect neutral.
Then I installed this cafe shelf from Ballard Designs

Once the shelf was installed we installed the light and added the laundry room essentials.

I put some not as pretty laundry items in this wicker basket, laundry detergent packs in the vintage Ball jar, and laundry whitener in this Anchor Hocking glass canister (from Target).

I had a little paint left over so I painted this metal container.

On the other side of the shelf, I placed a plastic tray (to keep any drips off the shelf), detergent, rags in the white bucket, and a couple decorations.

Here's my laundry room after the Wayfair DIY Challenge.  It's amazing how one item can help to inspire a whole room transformation.

Disclosure: I was given the choice of a Wayfair product to use in my home to complete this challenge as well as a gift card from Giftcards.com to purchase supplies toward this project.  You can follow Wayfair on Pinterest and Facebook to see more of their products.

  1. It looks so nice. I love the light! Do you like your front loading machines sitting low to the ground? I have mine on pedestals but they constantly shake due to the pedestals being broken from moving them to much. I have been thinking of getting rid of them but was not sure about the height issue.

    1. Thanks Bekki! I never had the machines on pedestals, so I have nothing to compare it to. But....when we purchased them, that was what the salesperson suggested because of the shaking :)
