There are as many ways to do laundry as socks stuck behind my dryer. There's the sort method - whites, darks, delicates... the throw it in if it's in the dirty pile method. Some people do a little everyday, some have a specific "laundry day", while others don't wash until they are out of clothes. Whatever floats your laundry, right? As long as kids are going to school with semi-clean clothes and moms and dads aren't detracting coworkers and friends we're okay. Today I want to talk a bit about laundry routines and some ways that I simplify the inevitable.
Are you up for a little Laundry 101? This is a picture of my laundry room - a dirty rag bucket on top of the dryer, a load of whites in the dryer and a basket ready for clean clothes. I only use three laundry products - you can see them on the shelf - Fresh Laundry detergent, Soft Fabric softener and Nature Bright Laundry Booster and Stain Remover. You can find them here. The Fresh Laundry detergent doubles as a pre-treater/stain remover and the Nature Bright is like Oxi-Clean, but it works so much better and is more concentrated. All Shaklee's products super-concentrated, NON-TOXIC and safe for the environment and safe for even sensitive baby skin. And the smell is awesome - clean and fresh. I can honestly say that they work better than any other laundry product that I have tried - Tide, Method, Caldrea, Mrs. Meyer's, Seventh Generation, Downy . . . .
For me, the best way to do laundry in our house is to do at least one load a day. It might be rags, towels, or clothes, but I am washing, drying and putting away at least one load of laundry every.single.day. If I get a load in first thing in the morning then it's dry by naptime and I can fold clothes or towels and watch a dvr'd show. It's nice to be able to sit down and relax for a bit even if I'm folding laundry. One benefit of doing laundry this way - folding it out of the dryer - is that I don't need to iron. Honestly, I can't remember the last time I ironed clothes. As for sorting clothes, I separate mommy and daddy's clothes into lights and darks, but my kids each have a clothes basket and they each get their own load - I don't separate their clothes into lights and darks unless they have a new dark or bright outfit. This keeps it easy because I just fold their clothes and put them away. My oldest helps by putting her clothes away in her dresser - this is very helpful. She does some folding too. If you see on my Weekly Docket, I do sheets and towels on Saturday.
So that's the method that I use for the inevitable task of laundry. How do you do your laundry? Any ideas that you use to simplify this task?

I've tried a bunch of different detergents and I'd love to try Shaklee's...how is it with cloth diapers? Right now I'm using Soap Nuts by Laundry Tree..it's o.k. I separate everything! whites, darks, towels/sheets, undies, baby, diapers. I do laundry every day..pretty much all day. In the warmer months I love to hang dry outside....love your blog!
ReplyDeleteI haven't used the detergent with cloth diapers, but I've heard that it works wonderfully, especially combined with the Nature Bright. It's 100% guaranteed, so if you don't like it, let me know and you'll get your money back :)
ReplyDeleteI rarely pre-treat because all of the stains come off on their own without pre-treating. That's why people love it for cloth diapers and those sensitive little bottoms.
I love your blog!! SO inspiring! I would love to try the laundry detergent products. My son is 7 months old and I go through shout like CRAZY. He has sensitive skin too and I have found that only Arm & Hammer doesn’t irritate his skin. My question is how long does your detergent last you? I usually do at least 1 sometimes 2 loads a day.
ReplyDeleteI buy the big "jug" - 64 oz. It does 64 loads, so it lasts me about 2 months (1 load/day). If you don't have an HE machine, 14# box of the dry detergent does 224 loads!
ReplyDeleteI'm the "do 1 load per day" kind of person. I used to do everything in 1 day...but changed it after we had our son. ;-)
