Thursday of My Weekly Docket

I love my cleaning routine - it's simple, covers the house and doesn't take more than a few minutes every day.  Here's what I do EVERY DAY:
  • SWEEP FLOORS (hardwood in the kitchen, powder room, small hallway, and entryway - this is mostly crumbs and dog hair) the kids use their dustpan, I use a broom and dustpan, but for the dog hair I LOVE my Bona Microfiber Dusting Pad on my BonaKemi Hardwood Spray Mop.  The microfiber dusting pad can be washed hundreds of times and it just works really well.  (I've had 2 Swiffer floor sweepers and the Method sweeper and this just plain works like a dream in comparison.)
  • WIPE COUNTERS - this means the kitchen counters get wiped down after each meal every day with Basic H2 and a cotton rag.  Most days all the counters get wiped down 3 times a day, some days more, and some days less.  I also wipe bathroom counters as needed - about 2 or 3 times a week.
  • LAUNDRY - at least one load washed/dried/folded/put away.  Here's a link to a post I did about my laundry routine if you're interested.
  • CLUTTER - open mail and toss junk mail, file or pay bills, etc., make sure kids' toys are cleaned up before rest time and bed, choose an area to de-clutter as needed and write that down on the appropriate day.
Here's my Weekly Docket - this is how I schedule out my daily/weekly tasks.
Then every day of the week, I choose a larger cleaning task to do - Thursday is "wash floors" day so that's what I'll detail today.  I'm just going to say this up front - I'm not a mop and bucket fan.  If you love your mop and bucket, more power to you.  Basic H2 can be mixed up in a bucket and can safely and effectively wash any type of floors.  Personally I've knocked the bucket over, caught my dog drinking out of it and I freak out a bit about the mop heads not being "clean".  Now, do I think there are ways to use a mop and bucket effectively - you bet!  I just won't be talking about it on this blog post, ha!  Here are my personal three floor washing methods:
  1. Quickie touch ups - cotton rag and Basic H2 in a spray bottle - spray the hardwood floors and wipe clean
  2. Hardwood Floors - Bona Mop with microfiber pad (wet) and hardwood floor cleaner
  3. Tile Floors (bathrooms) Linoleum Floors (mud room and laundry room) - Shark Steam Mop
Yesterday I already vacuumed these floors so I have the corners taken care of.  I do a quick sweep of all the floors and then I move tables, chairs, and any rugs in the bathrooms.  I wash the hardwood floors first and then move on to the bathroom floors and finish in the laundry and mud rooms.  I have multiple washable pads for these two tools, so I usually switch them out a couple of times during this whole process.  This is about a half hour to 45 minute process for me, but my floors are so clean at the end of my endeavor, that it's okay with me!  Any awesome floor washing tools that I should know about?

    1. Would you recommend (or not) using the shark steam mop on hardwood floors?

I'd recommend the steam mom on hardwood floors - I like it better on tile though. The mop head is kind of small for a large space (in my opinion). But as for effectiveness, it's very effective.

    3. I keep on being tempted by these steam mops...I have a question for you: you say the mop head of the shark is small, but it's bigger than the other one (Bona), right? At least it looks like that in the picture.

I have a large wooden kitchen floor (not hardwood, soft pine, but same idea -- oil based poly finish). Right now I'm using spray hardwood cleaner and a mop/towel thing to clean.

The Bona mop head is quite a bit larger than the steam mop. I LOVE the Bona!

    6. Do you get streaks on your tile floor from the steam mop? I have a steam mop and that is my only complaint. In the kitchen I have been known to follow over each section with my microfiber mop and that stops the streaks...but a lot of extra work.

    7. I just found your blog and I love it! It's so nice to find another person that truly enjoys cleaning. I hate the mop and bucket as well but haven't been able to find a product that cleans as well. I'm considering the Bona with the removable/washable microfiber pads. How do you wash your microfiber pads? I'm a little concerned just throwing them in the washer, even as a separate load of course.

    8. I just put new floors all through my house. I bought the bona spray mop plus the dust pad for the hardwoods. I also have the shark steam mop and vac, but I really like the armstrong cleaner for the kitchen vinyl tile. It comes in a spray bottle. It leaves just a tiny shine and seems to enrich the color of the tile. For the carpet, you can not beat the The hoover Steam Vac for carpet cleaning. Carpet really needs cleaning every two weeks if you really want it clean. With the old carpet I put a little non clorine bleach in with the cleaning solution or sometimes I might just put a little dawn dish liquid.
