How to: Organize a Linen Closet for Free

Wouldn't you love a linen closet that looks like this?

Me too, but right now I'll take a free, and organized linen closet.

Here's how I *quickly* organized our hallway linen closet.
(This is our hallway linen closet, not where I keep master bedroom towels and linens.)

before

empty closet

group like items together
(I took the tissue boxes and toilet paper out of its original packaging to give it a neater look and I grouped towels and bedding together as well)

fold towels and sheets the same way for a uniform, organized look - I like to fold our hand towels in thirds so I can hang them up quickly and bath towels are just folded in half and then in thirds

after

the guest bath shelf is just for guest towels so I can just grab everything on this shelf to get the bathroom ready for guests

How about you?
Do you have a linen closet that you'd like to organize for free?  Need some free labels to label your closet shelves or baskets?  I have a couple different types on my free printable page.

  1. Free is good!! I need to go tackle my linen walk-in closet, also known as "dumping ground". =)

  2. I just did this last weekend, with a storage cabinet. It had a mess of kids (unorganized) toys in it and I wanted to use the space for crafts, play doh, chalk, coloring books, crayons, etc. I too went with the "use what I have on hand" method (not to mention, it's better for the environment and our bank acct.) I used a capri sun box that I had cut for markers, Wine boxes that I cut and made into workbook/coloring book holders. A large empty coffee container held play doh tools....you get the idea. While the space doesn't have matching storage bins or cute baskets, it is functional and neat.

Thanks for sharing all you do. I enjoy reading your blog.

  3. De-clutter your closet. Take out everything from your closet and start labeling your items: keepers and giveaways. It is not healthy to keep items that you no longer use for a long time. Not only do these things clutter your closet but it may also attract bugs and pests into your closet. So instead of keeping them, give them away to charity. Group your clothes. Classifying your clothes into groups is another important trick to do if you want to learn how to organize a closet successfully. Group your items into the following categories: blazers, shorts, skirts, polo, polo shirts, dresses, etc. Decide which group of clothes goes in each shelf. Shelves are a great way to divide your items into groups. Dedicate areas in your closet for each of these clothing groups. Tip: Put your favorite clothes on the shelf that can be accessed easily. Another tip on how to organize a closet is to arrange your clothes by color. Put matching items together as according to the color. Make sure you follow a pleasing color coordination and progression.
