Bathrooms Week! SHOWER HEADS

Today I'm cleaning all of my shower heads.  The best way to do this is by taking the shower head down and soaking it in warm/hot solution that can break up the calcium and lime deposits on the inside of the shower head.  You can use a hot water/vinegar solution if your shower head is stainless steel and not plated.  I have brass and plated shower heads, so I am going to use Basic H2 and hot water to safely clean my shower heads.

Step One:
Remove shower head - you might need a wrench to remove this - put a cloth around it so you don't scratch the metal.

Step Two:
Heat water on the stove or in a bowl in the microwave to just below boiling.  I use about a teaspoon of Basic H2  to about 3-4 cups of water.  It should be enough to submerge the top inch or so of the shower head.

Step Three:
Place the shower head "face down" in the solution and let soak for a few hours.

Step Four:
Rinse thoroughly, dry with a microfiber cloth and re-attach.

  1. I love that you are taking the time and getting to the details of each area. I may have to try this. We need to clean our shower head! We did recently clean our fan and I was amazed at all of the dust.

  2. Great tips! I think we already have an energy efficient shower head. But a lot of people don't understand how they can save water by replacing their shower head. Have a wonderful day!

  3. I know I'm almost 2 years late to this, but I have a solution that you may or may not have heard of by now. I think there is even a pin floating around pinterest that shows this method. Instead of taking the whole head off (and risk scratching the finish, no matter how careful you are!), you can just tie a plastic bag around the head and let it soak in the vinegar or whatever solution you choose to use. I secure mine at the top with a twist tie. Like I said, this post is 2 years old so maybe you've heard of/tried this method by now! Also, LOVE your blog! I'm doing the Clean & Organized 2012 with you and so far it's working! It's kind of like exercising, if you have friends to do it with, and a plan laid out for you, you're way more likely to stick to it! Thanks for the motivation!

  4. This is a helpful advice. The building of lime deposits is what makes our shower heads blocked. This causes the water not to come out of the hole. Through this tip of yours the problem in all shower heads will be solved.
